Red Hook Labs champions young photographic talent with its second annual group show of international artists
Red Hook Labs’ summer exhibition, Labs New Artists II, continues the Brooklyn space’s dedication to supporting fresh talent with an impressive line-up of emerging photographers from around the globe. This year’s second annual show opens this week and includes 25 names, among them New Yorker Tyler Mitchell (image above) and Cape Town’s Rudi Geyser - both of whom have contributed to Nataal’s debut magazine – presenting personal and thought provoking bodies of work.
Other names to know include Christopher Smith, a young artist from Port Elizabeth who shoots mind blowing self portraits in his bedroom; Daniel Jack Lyons, another New Yorker whose activist images focus on marginalised youth worldwide; and Berlin-based Luis Alberto Rodriguez whose previous experience as a dancer draws him to capture the obscured human form in motion.
Artists were selected by a panel of experts, including Labs founder Jimmy Moffat; Nataal creative director Sara Hemming; Vogue Italia’s Alessia Glaviano; Zeitz MOCAA’s Azu Nwagbogu; Aperture’s Michael Famighetti and Dazed’s Ashleigh Kane, who will all mentor a finalist each for the following year. In addition, all profits Labs make from sales will go directly to 501(c)3, its education and jobs initiative in developing areas.
Labs New Artists is on view 13-24 June at Red Hook Labs, 133-135 Imlay Street, Brooklyn
