Nataal partners with NON XCHANGE at London’s ICA and Ace Hotel for three days of revolutionary events. Win tickets!

Nataal is partnering with NON XCHANGE, a series of multidisciplinary events in London, Berlin, Johannesburg and Cape Town that aim to create “a borderless network for understanding, exchange and collaboration”. Spearheaded by Non Worldwide, a collective of African musicians who challenge structures that create binaries and distribute power in society, and exploratory arts and music event curators Thirty Three Thirty Three, NON XCHANGE kicks off in London on 2 June. Through performance, discussion, and exhibitions, NON XCHANGE confronts spatial violence and systemic exclusion, forming a cultural dissence against the structural legacy of colonialism.

The opening event at the ICA is Language, Symbolism And Power, a panel chaired by curator and writer Osei Bonsu that plays on the idea of a meeting of the United Nations General Assembly. Joined by artist, DJ and writer Juliana Huxtable, Professor Akwugo Emejulu (University of Warwick) and filmmaker and academic Kodwo Eshun (Goldsmiths University), they will investigate how individual and collective bodies can come together in resistance to existing hierarchies of power and structures of oppression.

This talk will be followed by a programme of performances, screenings and installations featuring Angel Ho, Chino Amobi, Faka, Farai, Orethea, Bafic, Jody Brand, Akinola Davies and Tabitha Rezaire amongst others. On the same evening, NON XCHANGE will also debut Practice, a new film by Grace Wales Bonner, Harley Weir and Dev Hynes shot in Johannesburg and Cape Town that revolves around the life of Leroy Mokgatle, a 17-year-old ballet dancer from Pretoria.

The following day NON XCHANGE moves to the Ace Hotel for Power Structures, a discussion headed up Chino Amobi, FAKA and Farai Bukowski-Bouquet exploring how artists can confront and decolonise the whiteness of noise and industrial genres. Questions raised will be based on Kodwo Eshun’s lecture Non Negation: Blackness out of Space: Noise out of Time.

Finally on 4 June, NON XCHANGE moves onto Radar Radio for a day of programming from Curtly Ghallywood, Juliana Huxtable, FAKA , Angel Ho, Chino Amobi, Embaci and Klein.

After the UK, NON XCHANGE moves onto Berlin on 7 June, and then onto South Africa. But first, London.  Watch this space.
