Nataal joins 2manysiblings in Nairobi for the fourth anniversary of Thrift Social

It was 2015 when brother and sister duo Oliver Asike and Velma Rossa aka 2manysiblings launched Thrift Social in Nairobi. Since then, it’s grown from being a very cool mitumba party to a large scale fashion and music festival that has helped to shape Kenya’s creative scene. It now marks its fourth anniversary edition at Nairobi’s GoDown Arts Centre on Sunday 9 June with an impressive line-up of artists and activities, and Nataal is along for the ride as media partner. “Thrift Social has grown to become the platform for everything cool and fashion forward and is an exploration of creativity coming out of Nairobi,” says Asike.

Top of the bill is British rapper IAMDDB, who brings her chart-topping urban jazz all the way from Manchester. She’s joined on the line-up by local stars including R&B singer Karun, the soulful Wanja Wohoro and DJs Mix Master Lenny, TAIO and Shishi.

On the fashion front, 2manysiblings – who, between them, have collaborated with the likes of Yasiin Bey, Sauti Sol, Karen Walker, Everyday People, Art Comes First, the British Council and AFI – have taken Tie & Dye as their theme - an ode to the counterculture of the 60s and 70s and a nod to Thrift Social’s humble origins as a “lowkey backyard market”. Be ready to be tempted by their savvy curation of Kenya's most sartorially exciting vendors all afternoon.

Also on show will be an installation featuring Asike’s recently launched sustainable brand Vitimbi, which celebrates slow fashion with reuse and recycle as two if its key pillars. Drawing on Nairobi’s street culture and working-class communities, it offers sleek streetwear silhouettes made from a mix of upcycled second hand clothing and fabrics in a rich colour palette of emerald, merlot and ochre.

Thrift Social is on 9 June at The Godown Centre, Nairobi. Tickets are available here.
