Creative director Dani Larbi presents a fresh take on the Black ABCs through an Afro-European lens
The Black ABCs was a seminal series from 1970 by Chicago-based educators June Sark Heinrich and consultant Bernadette H. Triplett offering an uplifting guide to Black joy. A is for Afro, G is for Groovy, S is for Soul Sister… Fast forward to today and creative director Dani Larbi has taken inspiration from these inspirational learning aids to create his own cultural alphabet. Growing up in Barcelona with Nigerian and Ghanaian roots, his ABC explores the nuances of today’s Afro-European culture.
“Through this simple structure, the editorial explore coexistence, contrast and the fusion of these cultures,” Larbi says. “I consider it vital to materialise this vision for the present and future generations.” From the colour palette (red = Spain, green = Africa, yellow = Catalonia, blue = Family) through to the nostalgic styling and on point messaging (B is for Baile, D is for Diaspora, F is for Futball, N is for Nollywood, T is for Teranga), we’re invited to revel in the strength found in diversity.
