Let the Barcelona-based photographer’s serene imagery wash over you

“I never talked to water, but one day water spoke to me.” These are the words embossed on the cover of Denisse Ariana Pérez’s debut photobook, Agua. In it, the Dominican-born, Barcelona-based artist explores her natural affinity to water. “I keep coming back to water scenes. I keep coming back to lakes, rivers and oceans. I like to explore the interaction of people with water,” she says. “Water can disarm even the most armed of facades. Becoming one with water is not about rushing but rather about flowing. And flowing is the closest thing to being.”

This meditative work does not only represent a spiritual journey for Pérez but recalls the physical voyage that she took in order to capture what she terms “an aquatic pilgrimage”. From the bright blue waters of Sweden (where she studied art direction at university) to the soft pink lakes of Senegal, this breathtakingly beautiful tome takes in shores, seas and currents across the globe which – much like the tranquil humans she captures immersed in water - are all united in their tranquil versatility.
