Starting off our model profile series is Ethiopian beauty and SS20 breakout star, Amar Akway
Meet Amar Akway, a new and radiant face putting Ethiopian beauty on the international fashion stage. She debuted with Lanvin for SS20 and has gone on to walk for the likes of Givenchy, Valentino, Dries Van Noten, Schiaparelli and Valentino. Making Model.com’s list of top newcomers of the season, Nataal gets to know this 19-year-old ascending star.
Please tell us about your upbringing.
I was born and raised in Gambela, and moved to Addis Ababa when I was 14 because I started to be a runner for the national Ethiopian athletic team. For five years I was training every day.
What do you want the world to know about Ethiopian culture?
Ethiopia has many tribes, which gives so much cultural richness to the country. Most of all, it is here that you will find the cradle of humanity.
How did you discover modelling?
I was scouted by another Ethiopian model, Mekdalawit, who is now a very good friend of mine. She introduced me to her mother agent who then came to meet me all the way to Ethiopia! My very first show walking for Lanvin was a magical moment.
What is your definition of beauty?
My definition of beauty is mostly about what is inside you. I believe that beauty is how you help people and how open you are to them.
Is fashion doing enough to embrace diversity in all its forms?
I think we are all responsible for promoting diversity. And I am part of it by representing east Africa. Of course this is important to me.
What are your dreams for the future?
My goal is to become a top model.
