Brazilian imagemaker Caroline Lima debuts her short film exploring the notion of time

Caroline Lima’s first full foray into film, Areia, is the Brazilian photographer’s contemplation on time and its relation to the inner self. This poetic and lilting video essay presents a central character and his horse languishing in the beauty of nature and in each other, thereby rejecting the urgency of the now and embracing the richness of what’s long gone. “Living the flow of his own processes, the character coexists in an atmosphere of signs connected with the past, the present, and the time to come,” Lima explains. “The horse leads the force of nature and ancestry, promoting a symbiotic relationship with this character.”

Areia features a score by singer Xenia França, her haunting voice echoing Lima’s graceful lens. “The elements of sound and combination of rhythms intertwine in favour of sensations of delay or anticipation of time. It is a search for the fullness. It is an attempt to be in the present. Between sound and silence,” she adds.
