Sakhile Cebekhulu has envisioned his own Afrofuturist narrative for his latest capsule collection, entitled Bantu Space Odyssey. The young South African designer behind menswear brand Sash was inspired by Muzi’s track of the same name to come up with his fictional muse, Bekindlela Mkhonazi, Commander of the Azania Space Station. Our daring hero flies into orbit in 2076, a time when Africa leads the universe, yet he is on an urgent quest to save Bantu from the evil Dada, who steals the heritage from the planets he destroys.

Cebekhulu, who launched the label in 2017 after graduating from the University of Johannesburg, has shown at both AFI Joburg Fashion Week and Design Indaba. This season he offers up utilitarian separates in high tech honeycomb fabrics in intergalactic shades of black, grey and sand. Key to these looks are plenty of sizable pockets - handy for storing those laser guns and oxygen packs.
