Lilia Yasmin transports us to 1970s Algeria and back to the future with Atlal From Galbi’s Seasonless 2024 collection
If you’ve ever found yourself looking at vintage photos of Algeria from the 1970s, it’s impossible to miss the insouciant glamour and sense of hope that emanates from them. It’s these very same feelings that Atlal From Galbi’s latest campaign evokes. “People were very chic and sophisticated,” says creative director and founder of the Paris-based brand, Lilia Yasmin. “The culture of the future was being created, through cinema and music, in Algeria and the Arab world. I want to show a world without war and imagine what it would look like if our countries hadn’t faced so much tragedy.”
Yasmin does so with subtlety and grace, through the deceptively simple cuts and easy elegance of her Seasonless 2024 collection, which is inspired by the way that she herself dresses. “I don’t change my wardrobe for different seasons, I wear the same pants throughout the year. So I’ve created a mixed wardrobe of pieces that can be worn from one season to the next.” These effortless, unisex silhouettes stem from her pared back creative direction that’s slowly becoming the brand’s signature – after all, with beauty like Algiers’ you don’t need much else. The city makes the perfect backdrop for the collection, with the warm imagery and decision to shoot on both film and polaroid creating a nostalgic feeling reminiscent of hazy holiday snaps.
Working with a young local team to realise the shoot, Yasmin used the collection as an excuse to celebrate the fresh creative talent that the country is so rich in. “We have the resources, the vision and we are the one who needs to bring changes. I decided to go back to my roots and give a voice to the Algerian youth by shooting with young artists, models and photographers. I am highlighting their beauty and boldness, which is so full of hope and future.”
“I wanted to highlight the beauty and the boldness of an Algerian youth that’s full of hope and future”
There’s a serious point amongst all of the beauty, too. The world takes so much from these lands and these cultures. How many US rappers and pop stars have sampled Arab music without crediting it? Or major fashion brands that have replicated traditional clothing, such as the Algerian karakou, without citing their references? Yasmin, who worked at Louis Vuitton and Balenciaga before launching her label in 2019, should know. “My goal is to show how powerful our culture has been throughout the world – and how it remains so. Icons like Warda, Cheb Hasni and Oum Kalthoum were internationally famous and continue to inspire modern music and art, without necessarily being given the credit.”
