Watch free, Wukda’s short film sparking conversation around what it means to have liberty
How can one define freedom? Being unhindered financially, mentally or physically? Living without conflict, or simply leaving a toxic relationship? We all walk through different paths in life, and for that reason, freedom for one person translates differently for another. It’s these myriad ideas that emerging photographer and filmmaker Wukda explores in his latest short, Free.
With a background in fine art as well as contemporary dance, the London-based artist started out making music videos and has since directed branded content and films for clients including Nike, Vogue Italia, Reebok and Maharishi. Keenly aware of the importance of honing his own unique perspective, Wukda weaves his interdisciplinary talents in all of his projects. “I focus my photography and film on fashion and art. I'm always looking to convey a message in both mediums,” he says.
This is evident in this latest personal work. “Free explores the idea of freedom in different forms - the idea of truly being free whether it's not caring what other people think, financially free or even accepting that someone has passed away,” he explains.
Through a succession of scenes, and a carefully considered and diverse cast, the viewer is presented with different stories and possibilities. For example, “The lady within the swimming pool relates to the thought of being submerged by problems, struggles and obstacles. She starts off sinking and eventually rises back up to the surface. This is life!”
Elsewhere two krump dancers let loose in the confines of a library, a gang of bikers hit the open road, an elderly couple accept that this is their last waltz and an elegant black woman poses languidly surrounded by old masters in The Tate Britain. No scene is self-explanatory, however. Wukda deliberately leaves each narrative open ended, allowing his audience to define what freedom means to them.
So often we forget that freedom is a privilege. Through movement, music and speech, Wukda delivers a delicate yet powerful message which reminds us all of our inner fortitudes, particularly during the unprecedented times we’re all experiencing today.
