Makhan Sakho gives flowers to his mother and other West African women in his world with this personal fashion tale
Paris-based multi-hyphenate creative Makhan Sakho honours his Guinean, Malian and Congolese heritage with ‘Jour de Fête’. “Through these images, I want to show the beauty of West Africa and reimagine a few moments of my own childhood,” Sakho tells us. He’s taken inspiration from legendary photographers Malick Sidibé, Seydou Keita and Mama Casset and musicians Oumou Sangaré and Sekouba Bambino, as well as the book ‘Belles de Bamako’ by Lucille Reyboz. He also collaborated with a team of African diaspora talents to realise his nostalgic vision and pulled pieces from Ivorian brand Kente Gentlemen. But what makes this story extra special are the contributions from Sakho’s mother, Aïcha Soumaré, who lives in Dakar. “She went to Sandaga Market to find jewellery and lace fabrics that were sewn into garments, as well as bazin fabrics that were turned into head pieces by Lama Afro Tresse salon in Paris. And so, I dedicate this project to my family, and to the women of my community.”
