Atlal from Galbi is drawing inspiration from summers spent in Algeria for SS23

Billowing silhouettes cut from richly-toned satins, and draped layers in an aquamarine-hue as fresh as the Mediterranean sea - Atlal from Galbi’s SS23 collection is designed to navigate summers spent under the hot Algerian sun.

“A typical Algerian home is full of people: the mother, aunt, nephew, cousin, neighbour, with everyone sharing. Regardless of the time of day, you’ll find people sitting around the table, eating, drinking and talking; it has a really unique feeling.”

Paris-based Lilia Yasmin is telling us about her holidays spent with her family back home. Such memories inspire her label’s latest offering, entitled Kids of Universe. Day-to-night separates designed to suit any gender mirror this permutable environment. “Even the place where you sleep can change from one day to another. It is a space that’s always in movement and there is always noise,” she adds. “I’ve chosen colours which represent the energy of sharing, caring and kindness.”

Gemstone buttons take cues from Algerian women’s intrinsic glamour, she reveals. “The jewels represent the importance for women to always wear jewellery, especially gold, so finishing my clothes with jewels has become a signature of the brand.” Elsewhere in the capsule, you’ll find a deep cobalt blue coord that draws on Algerian police uniforms. “We call policemen 'stylo bic’, which means ‘the blue pen’. I’ve always been fascinated by their power but also the air of mystery that they create by never talking.” Another key look is a dramatic Bernous cape, broadly inspired by traditional wedding attire but more personally by Yasmin’s grandfather. “He was a figure of masculinity and respect in the home.”

To shoot the campaign, Yasmin recreated an Algerian rooftop scene in Paris. “I reconstructed ‘stah’, which is the rooftop where you take a nap when it's hot. And I chose models who already had a familial connection - Ines and Hamza are siblings and Merlin is their best friend, so the energy coming from the imagery draws on their real friendship and familiarity.”

In the accompanying film, this all-Algerian cast are superimposed on shots from the designer’s home and that of her family, as if transported back to their origins by the power of the garments. “It reflects on how memories of our roots nourish creativity. At the same time, I’m paying homage to the kids of minorities who grew up with the same dreams, references, memories and problems as any other child, but as an adult, don’t feel represented in the artistic world.”
