Reimagining the Lesotho shepherd with Morena Leraba, Atang Tshikare and Tsepiso Seema
‘From the Mountains to the World’ hails Morena Leraba and the energy he has carried from Lesotho to the global stage. The story sees the musician collaborate with multidisciplinary artist Atang Tshikare, fashion designer and stylist Tsepiso Seema and photographer Ryan Hing to create a space where Leraba becomes a bridge between realms.
“My world is music and Morena Leraba has always been my alter-ego, a shepherd from the mountains of Lesotho who is draped in traditional Basotho attire,” explains Leraba, whose Earth name is Teboho Mochaoa. “Over the years, I've worked with visual artists who have been eager to play around with the character and I’ve seen how art and installation blends with sonic elements. This time it’s fashion and it’s been breath-taking to see Atang and Thato styling me in a different way. I see how they see me, which is truly eye-opening,” he adds.

Tshikare, whose practice is steeped in African indigenous wisdoms, here reimagines the shepherd through artisanal costumes, which the team describe as “sculptures in motion that reflect both heritage and innovation – garments that elevate the narrative into one that is timeless, yet entirely present.” Meanwhile Seema shapes the story’s visual language by positioning Morena “not just as a musician, but as a living archive of culture and transformation.” To this, Hing’s lens “blurs the lines between documentary and dream - capturing Morena not only in portrait, but in presence.”
Leraba has always excelled in states of collaboration, fusing his psychedelic sounds with those of his peers, from Spoek Mathambo and Blk Jks to Damon Albarn and Major Lazer. Recently he has teamed up with collage and mixed-media artist Thato Toeba for their ‘Manifestations’ show at Amsterdam’s Buro Stedelijk, in between touching down for gigs in Romania, Germany and Budapest. While Leraba prepares to settle into recording an album next year, this story reminds his far-reaching audience that “our roots are not what hold us back, but what allow us to evolve.”
