Nataal debuts Sevaria’s latest campaign, Okafi Act 1 - the result of a budding collaboration between Jamie Kimani and Maganga Mwagogo. These Nairobi-based talents, the former starting out as a make-up artist and stylist before moving into fashion design with Sevaria, the latter a favourite Nataal contributing photographer, have found creative common ground for this project in the influences behind the collection.

“I’ve always drawn inspiration from the Maasai community who dominate the small town of Kiserian where I grew up,” Kimani says. “This collection further explores the culture of the nomad tribes in East Africa including the Dinka, Surma, Samburu and of course, the Maasai.” The decorative patterns that Maasai women and children draw on their Manyatta homes and the marks that adorn the young warriors of the Surma and Maasai are reflected in the prints and natural textiles that dominate these elegantly tailored looks.

For Maganga, it was essential to strip the story back, allowing Kimani’s bold, artisanal designs to shine. He says: “It was an exercise in restraint, allowing the rich textures of the hand loom fabrics and the craftsmanship to remain centre stage.”
