Brooklyn shoe designer Sunni Dixon shares this personal story shot with his nephew during lockdown
Sunni Dixon established his ethical footwear brand Sunni Sunni in 2019. Still fledgling, the Brooklyn-based designer found himself on pause during the Covid-19 lockdown and spending time with family in Southern Maryland. He used this moment of reflection to create a story with his nephew Manny – wearing his elegant AW20 / Resort 21 boots and chains with no small aplomb - and also pen the below open letter. Shot before the murder of George Floyd, Dixon hopes this project now more so than ever expresses the importance of perseverance, community and nourishing young black lives.
Prodigious Agrimony
(Agrimony represent a masculine nature and symbolises gratitude and is said to alleviate mental worry)
I don’t regret being home. Living in NYC the past 12 years, I’ve come home for some holidays, some birthdays and a few days just for a NYC detox. Here, my family does “Chipotle Fridays”. It’s not quite half-priced Moles Frites at The Rookery but it brings the same communal comfort.
Sub-leasing my apartment in November has made whatever city I lay my head home for a while. Since the country-wide mandate caused by Covid-19, self-isolating in Southern Maryland has kept me still and in my thoughts for the last five weeks. It's nostalgic and somewhat static though I missed it.
My memories aren’t all that’s here, rather an experience new and unfamiliar. An addition to my family six years in.
I carry the weight of responsibility to be a presence in his life while burdened with my own vulnerability and inexperience connecting with men in my family. These feelings were amplified after the early passing of his father. Being away I haven’t been able to truly bond with him and being here I’m finding I don’t know how to express my love to him. Time and opportunity make me more than capable though.
It’s the last week in April - my factories are closed, my emails have gotten slow responses, or no reply and I’m left unenthusiastic about the coming months. The future seems cloudy, but ambitions keep me motivated. I’m in the initial roll-out stages of my brand and currently brainstorming how to make-up for ex-ed production, shoot, and shipment dates while capitalising on this impromptu staycation like many creatives. I have few resources, eccentric ideas and perhaps a muse. I asked if he wanted to do a photoshoot with me. Without hesitation, like every Generation Alpha kid growing up in front of a camera, Manny enthusiastically said “Yes!”
