You debuted at Copenhagen Fashion Week last year as the winner of The Zalando Visionary Prize. Now you’re back. How does it feel?

I’m elated. People have now seen how we're positioned as an art brand by experiencing our immersive installation around a spiritual landscape. We're putting the body at the front of everything that we create and communicate.

What inspired your SS27 collection, ‘Sacred Ecologies’?

I’ve looked at Kenyan writer Ngũgĩ wa Thiong'o and his book ‘Wizard of the Crow’, which creates this new universe of design but also puts environmental ecocriticism and consciousness at the forefront of creativity. How does vernacular design decolonise someone's mind outside of their hyper-normalised structure? That's essentially what I want the world to envision with our work. We also restructured our craft processes by experimenting with new materials including banana fibre and wooden beads. It took a lot of time and sleepless nights but I’m very happy with the outcomes.

What stories reveal themselves through your CFW presentation?

It is based on sacred ecologies, which is the concept of exonerating or celebrating indigenous aesthetics through vernacular design. It’s understanding how all the concepts of ourselves are truly connected to the land and how people, places and processes are all aligned. And through our use of sculptural set design, the installation explores the concept of time as the essence of everything that we are. It was about how to control time. And seeing the models all at once meant the audience could experience a real energy in the space.
