The New Originals are top of their class for SS22 as we arrive at a boarding school in Ghana. Here, the well-dressed pupils reveal themselves as dedicated mathletes - a breed of super student who compete in mathematics competitions.

The Amsterdam-based brand was founded in 2015 by Eben Badu, Rizky Lasahido and Maru Asmellash with the promise of making ‘performance clothing for creatives’. Since then, their simple yet stylish silhouettes have found favour with a growing community of artists, musicians and fans. Geeks at heart, TNO’s nine-dot logo references a puzzle that challenges you to connect all nine dots with four straight lines. This season, they embrace the joy of sums wholeheartedly with one pullover featuring a Sudoku print. Elsewhere a TNO insignia sits on a uniform-like cardigans and t-shirt graphics work on some arithmetic.

The warm and alluring campaign has been shot by Dutch-Ghanaian photographer Kwabena Sekyi Appiah-Nti and his images accompany a soon-to-drop film by Ebeneza Blanche. “For me, the goal was to make the pictures look like a real day in the life of the kids at a boarding school. I wanted to give it this documentary touch,” Sekyi explains. “The highlight of shooting was talking and working with the talented boys and girls on set. So, I hope this story gives an insight into the life of Ghanaian youth and the culture of the country.”

From competing on stage to having fun in the playground and lining up for a class photo, this smart line-up of characters look ready to succeed. “We wanted to tell the story of the mathlete and since it’s SS 2022, we wanted to align it with the numerical side of the year,” adds co-founder Eben Badu. “With this project, we’re showing that Ghana is a place where a lot of creativity is happening and it’s somewhere that’s constantly evolving to achieve new heights!”
