This story by photographer and creative director Jessica Eliza Ross celebrates family, whether biological or chosen, and how Black British sub cultures have long expressed shared bonds through style. From sisters and father-son relationships to punk couples and queer friendship groups, what unites them all is love, kinship and solidarity.

“The pandemic has been tough on many but if this past year has taught us anything, it is to appreciate our loved ones. So, these images portray how families lift each other up through times of adversity,” Ross explains. “We want this narrative to challenge invisibility and to frame Black beauty through different interpretations of authentic self exploration with no limits on gender, sexuality, age or social group. We hope to have captured the emotional significance that hair and jewellery plays in defining ourselves and to illustrate the impact Black culture has had on British style.”
