Passage is a short film by Solange Knowles and Wu Tsang featuring the finalists of the International Woolmark Prize 2021

Passage is a stunning film in celebration of the six finalists of the International Woolmark Prize 2021. Created by Solange Knowles for the Saint Heron agency and directed by Wu Tsang, the emotive cinematic short takes us through the six stages of creation - contemplation, courage, optimism, vulnerability, discipline and strength – as a reflection of the collections by Bethany Williams, Matty Bovan, Thebe Magugu, Kenneth Ize, LECAVALIER and Casablanca. Each designer’s work speaks to the relationship fashion has to the body, to our collective consciousness, and to our planet.

Starring legendary musician Dionne Warwick and Pose star Dominique Jackson alongside artists SahBabii, Joi and KeiyaA, the film moves between a stark stage within a gilt opera house and misty scenes of nature to present a moving tableau. Styling by Ib Kamara and an abstract jazz score by Standing On The Corner add to the beautifully surreal and tender mood.

Knowles says: “Passage explores my interest in theatrical production through the translation of identity, spirit, philosophy and creation. Whether it be through album artwork, stage design, or filmmaking, I've always sought to create new visual languages that encompass the expressions my other works cannot communicate… To reflect on and honour the creative process with the IWP 2021 finalists, Passage aligns with Saint Heron’s mission to reverence creation as life, from abstraction to being.”

The IWP by Australia’s The Woolmark Company has long supported emerging fashion talent around the globe with previous editions going as far back to Yves Saint Laurent in 1954. This year the focus is on sustainability with its theme ‘less is more’. Finalists all receive financial and retail support as well as mentorship and present a six-piece Australian Merino wool collection to be judged on its responsible production and superior craftsmanship. The overall winner will be announced on 10 June 2021 as well as two further awards for innovation and supply chain. With Passage though, their shared vision of fashion’s future is already secured.
