Kirby Jean-Raymond’s Collection 3 did not disappoint with nods to incarceration and the black music experience
One of the most anticipated shows of the season, Pyer Moss’ latest collection was equal parts sporty and spiritual. Piggybacking on his recent appointment as artistic director for Reebok Studies ___, designer Kirby Jean-Raymond's Collection 3 featured high concept athletic sets and separates in deep reds, royal blues and pastels with finely tailored details and no shortage of branding.
Known for his commentary on the African American experience, the more formal and everyday parts of the collection featured prints by Richard Phillips, a man who spent over 40 years in prison for a crime he didn't commit. Phillips' bold, abstract works were printed onto architecturally constructed skirts, sheer button-ups, mod mini dresses and new approaches to men's suiting.
The more minimal pieces nodded to black music culture with bags shaped like small guitars, tambourines emblazoned onto jackets, dresses that felt like elevated church robes and wide shoulder-padded pieces in bright colours reminiscent of Prince. Appearances by Stranger Things star Caleb McLaughlin and activist Mathieu on the catwalk were pleasant surprises, as were the heel and boot collaborations with Brother Vellies.
