Rachel Ojuromi and Debby Fasingha go beyond fit checks to shake up the Lagos look
“A Lagos girl is genuinely just a girl,” muses Rachel Ojuromi – model, Progress Africa founder and rising style star. “Everyone wants her to be this boss who has it all figured out but that's not real. She's learning on the go, she's sensitive and she’s resourceful. She's culturally plugged in and she doesn't need anyone's validation for that. She’s also absorbing the same references as everyone else and making something completely her own with it. She's every cool kid out here quietly doing the work until the world catches up.”
This Lagosian is doing just that. Collaborating with stylist, designer and best friend Debby Fasingha, the feisty looks the duo put together – a mix of Nigerian brands and thrifted pieces from the city’s Yaba market – have been going viral thanks to Rachel’s #coolgirl fit check videos. One minute acting the runaway bride in a white dress, the next wielding a baseball bat while wearing a bra and pencil skirt, her stories are a fearless reflection of the city they hold dear. “When I create looks, I always want it to feel a little dangerous, something that makes you stop and look twice,” Debbie explains, adding: “The Lagos look is fresh, fun and experimental in the best way. There are no rules, just instinct and curiosity.”

These days you’ll catch the pair nailing it at events like Homecoming and Lagos Fashion Week, or being profiled in Dazed and i-D. But it’s not the glamour they’re after, as Progress Africa makes clear. Ojuromi says her platform has one core mission: “To make sure every young African creative knows that they are valued. They’re out there doing incredible things and their story matters.” And that’s what NATAAL is loving. So, for this story, she straps a pair of Homecoming x Nike Air Max Plus ‘Pan African’ trainers on her feet, and hits those Lagos streets in fresh and elevated looks that show the world exactly who’s boss.
